The following review written by one of the Software Informer contributors applies to version 7.0
Trados is a computer assisted translation application for Windows. This CAT application is one of the most popular one, partly due to the fact that it allows the translator to do a lot with it.
TRADOS assists the user in translating any text, but is more successful in texts that are similar to each other. For example, in translating a text with many similarities, TRADOS will constantly suggest translation options to you. For example, when you want to translate "The dog is red" and you have already translated "The cat is red," the application will tell you that it already knows that "is red" is translated to "es rojo." All you have to do is provide the translation for the unknown words. That is a silly example, but summarizes the great power of this application. In long texts with many similarities, such as handbooks, user manuals, technical texts, etc. TRADOS divides texts in segments, and you translate one segment at a time, which makes it all more comfortable and tidy. All the segments that you have already translated and are repeated throughout the text are counted as 100% matches, and those are translated automatically. TRADOS is an expensive tool, but the translator will appreciate all the work that it does for him.

  • It takes some workload off your back in translating long texts.

  • It's expensive.
  • It tends to not work so great on newer word processors.

"Is red" does not translate to "es rojo". It translates to "är röd". Does Trados really make such fundamental mistakes?
